Why notice periods get missed so often
Most contracts do not cancel themselves – they renew automatically. Miss the cancellation date and you often keep paying for months for a tariff that became too expensive long ago – with older contracts even a full year. The problem: notice periods hide in the small print, and the contracts sit scattered across emails, folders and spreadsheets. That is exactly where a good cancellation deadline app comes in.
How often that happens was measured by forsa for the Federation of German Consumer Organisations (vzbv) in 2020: for 24 percent of the 1,000 respondents, at least one contract they had meant to cancel had renewed within the previous two years. 62 percent of them suffered a financial loss as a result – 335 euros on average. Mobile, internet and landline contracts were hit most often, followed by streaming services and magazine subscriptions (vzbv, forsa survey 2020).
How to keep every deadline in view
- Deadline calendar – every notice period and expiry date colour-coded by urgency, at a glance.
- Countdown per contract – you see exactly how many days remain until the last chance to cancel.
- SmartAlerts – the app gets in touch proactively before a deadline passes or a contract renews.
- Cancel with one tap – finished cancellation letter, your signature, PDF export and dispatch straight from the app.
Which contracts?
For anything with a fixed term: insurance, phone and internet contracts, the gym, streaming subscriptions, electricity and gas. You add your contracts once – by photo, PDF upload or manually – and ContractLife works out the deadlines automatically.
What is a notice period?
The notice period is the lead time you have to observe for a cancellation to take effect on the date you want. It does not say when the contract ends, but by when your cancellation must have reached the provider. If the contract says “three months to the end of the term” and the contract expires on 31 December, the cancellation has to be there by 30 September at the latest — not sent, but arrived. Let that day pass and the contract renews automatically. This is where most unwanted renewals come from: the decisive cut-off lies months before the date people remember. Because arrival is what counts, traceable dispatch is the safe option — in a dispute the person who cancelled has to prove it arrived. The length sits in the contract itself, though § 309 no. 9 BGB caps it for consumer contracts. So note two things per contract: the end date, and the period before it.
Calculating the notice period: three dates that get confused
Someone who misses a deadline has usually not been careless — they had the wrong date in mind. The end of the contract is the day it expires. The notice period is the lead time before that. The cancellation date is the last day your cancellation may arrive — end of contract minus notice period. ContractLife works out precisely that third date and shows it as a countdown. You then only have to remember one day instead of a calculation. The formula: cancellation date = contract end minus notice period.
What German law has required since 2022
For consumer contracts concluded on or after 1 March 2022, the German Fair Consumer Contracts Act made the rules considerably more consumer-friendly. The governing provision is § 309 no. 9 BGB:
| Rule | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Initial term | At most 24 months — this limit has applied for much longer, not only since 2022. |
| Automatic renewal | Only into an open-ended contract — no longer silently for another year. |
| Period after renewal | At most one month. After that you can get out on a monthly basis. |
| Cancellation button | Under § 312k BGB, continuing contracts concluded online need a cancellation button on the website. |
| Older contracts | Concluded before 1 March 2022? Those may still carry annual renewal and a three-month period. |
General orientation, not legal advice — what governs is always your specific contract.
When the ordinary deadline has already passed
A missed deadline is not always the end. Besides ordinary cancellation there is the right to extraordinary cancellation, which applies regardless of the term — typically after a price increase, a change to the terms, or when the service is not available at a new address. Such events carry their own, usually short deadlines that start when you learn of them. Overlook the announcement email and you lose not just money but a way out. In ContractLife you record the date of a price change with the contract, and the deadline lands in the calendar as its own countdown.
Cancelling a contract: the cancellation letter comes from the app
Being reminded in time is one half – actually sending the cancellation is the other. ContractLife creates a finished cancellation letter for every contract, filled with your contract details, which you sign directly on your iPhone and export as a PDF. You send it yourself, by e-mail or post to the provider – the app is not a cancellation service and forwards nothing. Especially for mobile contracts, where according to vzbv most unwanted renewals happen, that is the difference between “almost did” and done.
How does the app remind me of notice periods?
ContractLife calculates the notice period from each contract, shows it with a countdown in the deadline calendar and gets in touch by SmartAlert in good time before the deadline passes.
When does the cancellation have to reach the provider?
What counts is arrival, not dispatch. With a three-month period to the end of the year, the cancellation has to be with the provider by 30 September at the latest. ContractLife works out that cut-off and reminds you 30, 7 and 1 day beforehand.
What can I do if I have missed a deadline?
The contract continues for the time being. For contracts concluded from March 2022 onwards, however, you can get out monthly after the renewal. On top of that there are rights to extraordinary cancellation, for example after a price increase or a move. ContractLife puts the new deadline straight back into the calendar.
Does the one-month period apply to all my contracts?
Only for consumer contracts concluded on or after 1 March 2022. Older contracts may still provide for an annual renewal with a three-month notice period. What governs is your specific contract.
Is the cancellation deadlines app free?
Yes. For a single person ContractLife is completely free and ad-free. Adding contracts and monitoring deadlines costs nothing, with no credit card.
Which contracts does this work for?
For every running contract with a notice period: insurance, phone, internet, gym, streaming, electricity and gas.
How do I calculate the notice period?
Cancellation date = contract end minus notice period. If the contract ends on 31 December with a three-month period, the cancellation has to reach the provider by 30 September. ContractLife works this out from every contract automatically and shows it as a countdown.
Can I cancel a contract with ContractLife?
Yes. The app creates the matching cancellation letter with your contract details; you sign it on your iPhone and export it as a PDF. You send it yourself – ContractLife is not a cancellation service and forwards nothing to providers.
